Lionbridge Awarded Five Year Interpretation Services Contract by the State of Maryland
Interpreters Work Onsite to Provide Services in Over 30 Languages Across the State of Maryland
WALTHAM, Mass. - August 27, 2007 - Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LIOX) today announced that it has been awarded a five year contract as the primary Contractor to provide the onsite (at the required site) foreign language interpretation services for the State of Maryland. This centralized contract will streamline access to interpretation services for agencies across State government.
Lionbridge is working with numerous departments and agencies within the Maryland government to ensure that the State is able to address the communication needs of its citizens. This statewide contract is also available to allow county, municipal, and other non-State governments in Maryland to procure services directly through the contract vehicle at the same rates.
According to a Census Bureau survey, diversity is growing in nearly every state. A full 18% of the U.S. population does not speak English as their native language. Approximately 337 languages are spoken or signed by the population. It is projected that by July 1, 2050, the Hispanic population in the U.S. will reach 105.6 million, constituting 25% of the nation’s total population. With this growing diversity, state governments will need to make sure that they have the resources necessary to cope with a large non-English speaking population. Interpreters will likely become a staple for any public-facing process.
