Windows 2000 Core Component List

An important Microsoft logo requirement is that applications must not register, reference count, uninstall, or overwrite any core components of the operating system (although version-checking and upgrading is acceptable).

Core components are defined as all files which ship with the operating system plus crucial files which may be added by secondary installations, such as ODBC, DirectX and similar components.

The listed core components ship with Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 or are generally added by secondary installations. In addition to those listed in the core list text file, please note that any DLL with the format "MSVC*.DLL" or "MFC*.DLL" and any files with the extensions *.trn, *.olb, and *.oca are considered core elements. Further, please note that all OLE, DirectX and MAPI components are considered core. Some ODBC and DAO components are considered core, but others are not core; please download corelist.exe for specific information.

Registering, refcounting or overwriting these components are considered fail conditions for all Microsoft logo tests. We have tried to be as comprehensive as possible, but due to the complexities and hardware options available, there are certainly some core elements which have not made it on this list.
