All over the world, gamers keep on gaming at ever-higher volumes.
In 2018, 2.3 billion people worldwide—nearly 30% of the Earth’s population—contributed to the gaming population. And in the process, they spent $137.9 billion.
Where are the gamers?
One of the world’s fastest-growing gaming markets is Latin America. The region grew 13.5% YoY in 2018 and is slated to grow by another 50% over the coming 3 years, with Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina leading the charge. The market is experiencing growth across all segments (PC, console, and mobile) with a particular rise in mobile gaming as smartphone adoption grows. The region now boasts 234 million gamers and is becoming a veritable global force. Mexico and Brazil, for example, have more gamers than either the UK or Germany.
And Latin American gamers aren’t just playing games developed by companies in other parts of the world. Increasingly, they’re playing games developed directly in-region. We recently met with Brazil Games representatives at GDC and were interested to hear that Brazil now has 375 digital games developers, who produced 1718 games in 2017. That’s a staggering 28% growth YoY.
How can Lionbridge support this growth?
Like the companies it supports, Lionbridge Gaming—a world leader in localization, dubbing, testing, and community management for the games industry—is also expanding in Latin America. We recently opened our Costa Rica Testing Center and expanded our Costa Rica localization center to form an integrated Game services platform for the Americas. Last year, we launched a Mexico City studio in partnership with LABO, and we’re opening a Brazilian studio this month.
With these additions, Lionbridge now has an established presence in the LATAM market. That presence supports our ambition to help deliver high-quality, culturally-rich gaming content for this fast-growing region. What’s more, it allows us to support the local ecosystem of developers striving to reach the world’s gaming audience.
Global expertise across industries
Global expansion is nothing new for Lionbridge. We’ve helped game developers, publishers, and platform-holders deliver quality experiences worldwide for over 20 years across 27 solution centers and 350+ languages. For decades, Lionbridge has understood that resonating with customers in new markets necessitates a presence on the ground. An in-person presence helps companies develop, test, localize, and iterate more quickly and more meaningfully. On the ground, they benefit from real-time feedback and support from project managers, translators, testers, and gamers with the linguistic and cultural understanding companies need to succeed in a given market.
Gaming companies that want to seize the burgeoning opportunity in Latin America now have a reliable single-point solution for all their localization and testing needs. Lionbridge has the advantage of being both a true regional specialist and a trusted global partner.
