As Senior Test Manager for Lionbridge’s new gaming lab in Jinan, Richard Sun works with his team to test games and help our customers deliver great gaming experiences. In addition to being an avid gamer, Richard enjoys Kendo, diving and supporting his Lionbridge Gaming team.
Tell us a little about your role at Lionbridge Gaming. What does a typical workday look like for you?
I am a Senior Test Manager at Lionbridge Gaming. I am mainly responsible for Jinan’s functional game testing support, team management and testability improvement, tester training and coaching.
There is no typical day in managing game testing, since game testing is meant to test unexplored programs. To find bugs, we need to examine each area of the game. I normally communicate with the team to find problems with our workflow and find solutions to improve our game testing standards and our efficiency. The management team enables our team to better complete testing tasks based on customer requirements. I also set up teams, training and methods, according to the needs of a specific customer.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I most enjoy supporting and helping my team and upholding the standards of Lionbridge Gaming.
What first made you interested in gaming?
I was born with a passion for games, and they have helped inform my life philosophies. When I was a boy playing Tetris, I realized the importance of acting quickly under pressure. Later, when I was playing Super Mario, I learned the importance of working hard in exchange for gaining greater opportunities.
Nowadays, my reason for loving gaming is simple: Games can bring happiness to people, and I want to be a part of making people happy. I’m also interested in the trophies and achievement systems that are a part of gaming.
Is there any game that is coming out soon that you are particularly excited about?
Cyberpunk 2077. I’ve been waiting for the game to come out for a long time, because the release date keeps moving back. Normally, when a game comes out, I buy the limited edition and play it through quickly, then upload a video of myself playing to BiliBili (a platform like YouTube in China).
What key trend do you see on the Chinese gaming market?
The biggest market for games in China is still the mobile phone market, but the console market is beginning to slowly grow. Steam PC, a digital platform for PC games, is also popular. Localization is very important in China: Chinese marketing operates entirely different than global marketing.
What is the most exciting opportunity on the horizon for your team this year?
Our team is still young, so we’re working on building long term relationships with our existing and new customers.
What is the best part of your job?
I enjoy being able to bring my game testing and management experience to the Jinan games lab and being able to share my skills with the team. I also enjoy rising to any challenge.
How long have you lived in Jinan? What do you enjoy most about the city?
I’ve only lived in Jinan for a few weeks. So far, my favorite things about the city are its food and the springtime season.
What do you think makes Jinan a great location for a Lionbridge games lab?
Jinan is a great city for a Lionbridge games lab due to its geographic location and the local workforce.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy Kendo—a form of martial arts—and diving, and I serve as an e-sports referee. I also enjoy creating patents for inventions. My favorite activity is playing games—it’s half my life.
Do you have a favorite local saying?
In China, my favorite local saying is “If you don’t have a lot of luck, work hard and with a lot of effort.” In Jinan specifically, my favorite saying is “Holding the child and pushing the mill adds people but doesn’t add strength.”
