Case Study: Multilingual Retail Marketing
New AI Content Creation Solutions for a Sports and Apparel Giant
In this installation of our Meet the Pride Series, meet Winnie H., Lionbridge’s Community Manager. Winnie has been at Lionbridge for over 15 years, watching it develop from a localization provider to an AI-first language and content solutions provider. Read about Winnie and her passion for community management.
I manage Lionbridge’s community. Using Aurora AI studio, we connect our customers with a robust, unique crowd of 500,000+ people from over 450 countries worldwide. They’re nearly evenly split in gender and have expertise in business, engineering, humanities, science, technology, commerce, human resources, healthcare, fine arts, law, and other areas. These people are ready to assist with language and content projects, sometimes within hours.
I also manage our language professionals, an equally large-scale, global, and diverse crowd of over 4,000 people.
I love interacting with people. Finding the best contributors for a job and supporting them through the project is very rewarding. I also really enjoy being creative and discussing the best possible customized solutions for customers.
I begin my work during my commute, making my list of priorities for the day. I use the morning to address new customer requests that have come in. The rest of the day, I look for multilingual copywriters, connect with the community members assigned to projects, and help onboard community members onto project teams.
I started as a linguist. After a few years, I became a project manager, and then was offered the community manager role. I’ve always been very curious and interested in how we recruit, maintain good relationships with community members and linguists, and manage them in their various projects.
Sometimes, I think of us and our community partners as magicians. We transform ideas into concrete deliverables. We analyze customers’ requests, help them decide what they need, and then deliver the final product. We also perform magic by helping customers get what they need in the most convenient way, whether that’s related to their time, budget, etc.
I helped support a customer who needed Life Sciences subject matter experts to do clinical reviews for their multilingual material.
We had a customer that needed to train its AI model to read handwriting, particularly in a few Asian languages. I coordinated people from our community to aggregate a high scale of handwriting samples in three Asian languages. We helped the customer train its AI tool to predict the word a user would write in just the first few strokes of the first letter.
Lionbridge's technology has changed dramatically. In the past, we used dongles for the CAT tools in our computers. Now, much of our work is on the cloud or part of an automated workflow. Of course, AI is a massive part of Lionbridge’s evolution. AI connects us to our community partners. AI helps us automate some of our work so we can invest more time and effort in genuine human connections with our community partners. We used to manage community members via emails and phone calls, but now we incorporate AI to streamline many of our manual tasks.
